What factors in a website attract you to some and repel you from others. You may think to your self "well there is nothing complicated about it, I simply like it or I don't ". A study made by Glamorgan University Business School found that it's not just a Web site's subject or function that determines whether it will draw more men or women. The appearance of the site also might play a subtle role.

They found out what features appealed to the sexes by looking at the make-up of personal website sites by 30 men and 30 women.It showed men liked straighter lines, fewer colours and more formal language. Further research found that the majority of sites, 74%, were produced by a man or a predominantly male team, while just 7% were designed by a female or female team. The Welsh investigators found that women were drawn to pages with more colour and preferred "informal" rather than "posed" pictures. Men, naturally, showed a penchant for dark hues and "straight, horizontal lines across a page" as well as animated objects.

This concluded In almost every case that men preferred sites designed by men and women like those created by women. So what if you are a man that like the look of female designed websites? I guess that would be that x chromosome voicing it's opinion.

These new finds have proven to be very valuable for consumer behavior and marketing. The recognition of this might determine wether your website is successful or not. Given the strong tendency for each sex to prefer the output of its own sex, it does not make sense to attempt to appeal to women using an aesthetic which is largely male. Maybe a combination of both elements might be successful. One thing we do know is that more research is need.
